Quickie: Password Cracking & Energy, (Sun, Jul 28th)

When Johannes talked about my diary entry “Protected OOXML Spreadsheets” on his StormCast podcast, he mentioned that I privately shared data on the power consumption of my desktop with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU when running Hashcat.

Let me share this with you:

I obtained data from my utility company, and created a graph of the daily electrical power consumption of my home for the past couple years.

2 peaks really stood out, and after stome digging, I figured out they corresponded with periods that I ran hashcat for several days.

Long runs of hashcat consume so much power that they clearly stand out.
